It’s been 12 years giving voice to survivors of Sexual Violence through #MeToo
In 2006, Tarana Burke initiated the Me Too campaign in the United States to promote the awareness of sexual assault and harassment. Eleven years later, American actress Alyssa Milano invited online communities to transform #MeToo into a worldwide movement where women could have voice and power to tell their stories.
Throughout its growth on social media and also in physical scenarios during 2017 and 2018, #MeToo has become part of the actual discussion on sexual violence where media, advocates, non-profit organizations, and artists, among others, have been involved.
And most important, survivors continue to lead the narrative and empower people everywhere in the world to take un this initiative. They have played a key role in the movement.
According to the Pew Research Center, there are three key findings of how #MeToo has been discussed on Twitter and other social media outlets in the past year:
1. The #MeToo hashtag has been used more than 19 million times on Twitter.
2. Personal stories and prominent celebrities have been key topics in #MeToo tweets.
3. A majority of #MeToo tweets in high-volume periods have been in English, but interest spanned multiple languages.
MeToo has covered great portions of the world, with translations in dozens of languages but the same message. Tarana Burke, as the founder of this movement, works to keep the movement active everywhere.
